Jan Gehl, Professor of Urban Design at the School of Architecture at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen, and founding partner of Gehl Architects - Urban Quality Consultants, gave insightful talk at the Opening Plenary of the EFC AGA and Conference in Copenhagen on 31 May. After screening his short film, "The Human Scale", which showed a global panorama of cities, the challenges they face, and some solutions, Mr Gehl shared his view of the importance of the good city for the cities today and for the future. His main point was that the best thing foundations can do is to change mindsets of people who can then go and make change in their local environments. He gave the example of New York City, where he helped to change city planners' ways of thinking when it came to maki...

Long-term residents in established, underserved neighborhoods often have great needs, an eroding tax base and little voice in matters which have direct impact on their lives and those of their friends and neighbors. Crime, chronic underemployment, shuttered storefronts and lack of community resources offer a host of problems to those living in the shadows of City Hall. Hearing the call, deep-pocketed developers have historically have answered with bulldozers and buy-out offers, eyeing profits over preservation and conservation. Suburban sprawl, once the clarion cry of planners and development specialists, no longer holds the same appeal it once did. Today, livability, walkability, mass-transit and urban renewal are familiar, warmer terms. Strip malls, scorched earth and treeless, impersonal subdivisions have lost ground to the vibrancy of inner-city living and all it affords. Urban living is in. Commuting is out. How to make sense of it all and strike a satisfying balance between old and new, adaptive reuse advocates are building bridges without the use of bulldozers or blood-letting. Smart citizens, concerned officials and forward-thinking urban planners are planning for the future without discounting the past. Finding common, mutual interests where everyone wins isn’t easy, but the efforts expended save and enrich lives, reinvigorate communities and create empowerment instead of poverty, despair and displacement. Livable neighborhoods are incorporative in their nature. Rehabbed brownstones and community reinvestment loans shouldn’t drive people from their homes. Recycling requires preservation and reuse. Applying these same principles to buildings, artists, eateries and retailers invest themselves and their energies by creatively connecting the past, present and future. Incorporating the new with the familiar creates a sense of continuity rather than developing an air of distrust. Change is inevitable. How it occurs isn’t. Careful, considerate planning and development brings fresh food, fresh ideas, new faces and gathering places. Vibrancy creates jobs, reduces crime and energizes people. Involvement and innovation are life-affirming activities. Renovation involves more than a coat of paint and a couple of potted plants if it’s to be anything more than a thin veneer. Paving over the past creates nothing more than impermanence, a feeling of discontinuity. Adaptive reuse adds vitality and builds upon the past. It’s creative rather than destructive. Conservation isn’t always conservative. Preserving the past no longer means mummification, and development doesn’t have to mean “leave no trace.” An evolving community promotes growth, embraces change and puts people first. Building on a neighborhood’s character requires conscious intent, careful planning and considerate choices. No two should ever be alike. Adventurous exploration can unearth treasure as well as affording new vistas. Adaptive reuse offers the possibility, the promise of both. Its benefits make sense, save dollars and rebuild lives while preserving the integrity of communities. Mindfulness has made a comeback, and this time it’s here to stay.
